Utah is so special for so many reasons! And some of the special things about Utah create some challenges when trying to keep our plants green and healthy.

Utah soils are much harsher than other soils around the country. We are the second driest state in the Union and have some of the most alkaline soils in the region. The result of dry and alkaline soils is that grass refuses to "green up" as easily. Iron, the mineral that gives a deep green color to grass, cannot mobilize in alkaline soil. This is one of many reasons that a targeted fertilizer program is essential for a green and weed-free lawn.

Plant growth can be attributed to 3 primary nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, & Potassium (N-P-K). Without these nutrients, plants simply cannot thrive. When they are readily available, plants can grow as fast as they can absorb and metabolize the nutrients.

Most of us have seen a bag of fertilizer and have noticed the 3 big numbers at the top. Those three numbers represent the mixture, by weight, of the 3 primary nutrients:

Nitrogen - Affects shoot-root growth, density, color, disease resistance, and stress tolerance.

Phosphorus - Affects the rate of seedling development and root growth.

Potassium - Affects drought tolerance, cold hardiness, and disease resistance.

Because plants, and in this case grass, absorb nutrients in the soil, nutrients can eventually become depleted. The re-application of nutrients is required to keep a lawn green, growing, and weed-free. This is why we developed the Rasmussen Landscapes Monthly Targeted Fertilizer Program.
