Laying Sod -
The Rasmussen Way
Laying new sod is a bit of a science and takes great care. It requires intensive preparation and an experienced hand, which is where our years in the industry count. At Rasmussen Landscapes, these are our steps for installing a brand new lawn:
Demolition
- Remove and haul away old sod and existing plant material
- Establish the subgrade and contour the dirt
Preparation
A great lawn starts with the right preparation. With the right process, harsh native Utah soil can be turned into the perfect place for sod to thrive.
- Till existing soil and rake out rocks, clay, plant material, and other debris
- Till in a few inches of organic material to give the future grass nutrients it needs
- Rake to grade
- Install sprinklers for full coverage
Sod Laying & Final Details
- Rake a final grade using top soil and a root-starter fertilizer. Often handfuls of soils will be used last minute to get the level just right
- Lay sod and fit seams together perfectly
- Cut precisely around sprinklers and on edges
- Check coverage of sprinklers
Post install care - For the next few week
- New sod must be kept moist, but not soaking wet
- In the hot summer, new sod may need to be watered 10-15 minutes, every 3-5 hours (and less in cooler months)
- After a few weeks, when roots have established, watering can be decreased to normal watering
- Keep people and animals off lawn for a few weeks
- First mowing will be a few weeks after installation, after sod roots have properly attached to the soil beneath
We Only Work With the Best
We work with great local partners to only use the highest quality sod and the cleanest and most nutrient-rich soils and amendments
Sod vs Seeding...
Why is sod superior to seed?
Comparing seed to sod requires a fair comparison - apples to apples. There are some applications where seed might be necessary but for a typical home, sod is really the only option.
Sod-
Sod is green, lush, ready to walk and play on and ready to cut within a few weeks.
Healthy sod creates a natural barrier to keep weeds down.
Seed-
Seed will take months if not an entire year to get to the point of being able to play on and look right. By then, weeds have had the chance to take over and the dirt will be uneven from foot traffic.
During that year, you will not be able to walk or play on it and you will spend your time weeding emerging plants, special watering, and caring for your new and fragile, patchy lawn.
